Finished Harpy

Well me again. Managed to finish this big guy before I moved and lost my workspace, unfortunately the pics were rushed and I couldn't find anything to use for a proper background because he's just so damn big, and awkward t photograph.

Also I think the photos are overedited and slightly washed out. But I'm happy hes finished and think it looks great on the table.

Kheres Mortis complete

Hello again. Welcome to another update of my rambling towards completing a Sons of Horus army, Today I present the completed Kheres pattern Mortis contemptor.

This guy came together quickly in the end, probably because I rushed him, and because I fell into the trap of over weathering him. I'm not unhappy with the results until I put the two completed dreads together and compare them, the first has a much more controlled application of chipping which I prefer the finish of.

Anyway, here's the pics:

Tac squad and Rhino done!

I apologise for the lack of recent updates, I'd like to say its been because I've been busy, but I've just been lazy.

But putting that behind me, I found my mojo, and its been a busy couple of days here at Casa de Sheep, the results of which I present to you now.

Here's the finished Tactical squad #3

As you can see they are armed with a missile launcher and plasma gun, for general duties, I think this load out is pretty straightforward and can threaten most things on the table.

Sons of Horus Tactical demi-squad done

The pics of UK games day have gotten my creative juices bubbling. And I managed for finish the first 5 infantry figures for the Sons. As you can see I am continuing with the battle warn beaten to hell look of the marines, and persevering with the sea green scheme because I think the official FW scheme looks like shit.

FW have also changed the eye of horus they are using, these guys sport the updated one, and the original contemptor will be the odd one out with the old style. I am considering whether or not to pick up some of the decal, or continue with the freehanding of the symbols.

Each of the marines also has a chaos star of some type free handed onto their armour somewhere, though most of them got so battle damaged its hard to make them out.

It was my first attempt at using the airbrush to do this style of power weapon, and I must say I really like the effect. I would have preferred a purple, but I didn't have the right colours, and impatience won out.

Next is assembling the rest of the squad, and deciding what out of all the awesome FW goodies I want next!

Contemptor #2 - Kheres Mortis

Managed to get a day of modelling in as a reward for finishing all my assignments, and this is what I knocked out.

Kheres Contemptor
Being the poor uni student that I am now I was forced to make the arms myself. I had previously cast the multimelta for a failed autocannon conversion, so I used it as a base. The ammo hopper is from the front mount of a Leman Russ MBT, the assault cannon barrels are from the stormravens I built for the khorne wing. Cyclone is from the termi box, again because I'm cheap.

The groin had to be cast as well, because I didn't receive one in the package whan I bought him, and seeing as I could, and it would take weeks and alot of hassle to get a replacement I thought this was easier.

I tried really hard to make the cowering fist look like he was actually afraid. It wasnt actually working til i remembered I had a fine cast termi Librarian left over from my conversion for the GK's I never finished.

In the eventual list #2 will play flyer defence, Bs 5 skyfire and 12 assault cannon shots, and 2 krak missiles will ruin most flyers days.

Contemptor PIP

Updates are coming thick and fast these days, going to stop soon though. Anyway, got some work done on the contemptor for the Sons.

They had been put on ice for a while due to the nids getting some love, but I put paint to model today in a fit of procrastination.

As you can see, hes not as clean as DPA's SoH, I just couldn't get excited by that style of painting, hes in the middle of the seige of terra, there isn;t going to be time to reapply paint to chipping.

This is obviously still PIP.

Let me know what you think, and any suggestions you may have will be greatly appreciated.

WIP Harpy

Is it a bird, is it a plane, no its a flying monstrous creature!

As Rictus guessed in the last entry, the mystery model is a harpy.

Hive Guard painting tut

Hi everyone, here's the second half of my hive guard build series. Painting, for many years I used GW black undercoat for EVERYTHING! however recently, since I started using an airbrush mostly, I have been using Tamiya grey surface primer. It still comes from a rattle can, however the colour is much easier to lay lighter coloured paints over, which is especially handy for my nid scheme.

Hive Guard

Hi everybody; long time between posts.
Unfortunately I haven't made much progress on my SoH, uni and life have been getting in the way of my much more important hobby activities.
I did however get to play in QM 3 over last weekend, and as usual it was a well run event, and I had a great time catching up with mates and playing some games of 40k.
I was lucky enough to win players choice again with my nids

And best painted went to my good friend John, and his amazingly painted Carcarodons space marines. He has a blog HERE which I recommend you go check out, he's a very prolific and quality painter.

Group shot

So all the completely assembled models before primer.

I hadn't realised until I took this pic that the contemptor and Sgt model were in such a similar pose, guess I'll have to add some more variety to the future models.

The basing was done with a mix of cork, crushed slate, glued down with superglue, before adding some secret weapons razor wire.

So more assembly of the rest of the squad to follow, and waiting for paint to arrive. . .

Sons bolter boys

Progress has been slow, but steady, getting into the meat and veg of any SM army now, the bolter carriers, or ablative wounds for you heavy and special weapons if you'd prefer.

Guy on the end is dropping his bolter.

Sgt something

Finished assembling the first infantry figure for the Sons, took alot more time and fiddling around then I anticipated, the combination of various Mks of armour give a nice feel I think, and is something I can see happening during a protracted siege like the siege of Terra.

SGT something
The arms are from the plastic CSM set, and are a nice analogue for Mk2 once your file off the extraneous detail.

I hope to have the first 5-10 men finished by the end of next week, but that may blow out due to my time being taken up by work/uni entrance course I started a couple of weeks ago.

Thanks for looking.

Sons of Horus

As I'm sure many of you have, I've been reading the Horus Heresy series, and as I'm sure many of you will agree, its an excellent series.

Now I've decided to devote my horde of FW marine Mks to the dark gods, and do the main protagonist forces of the Sons of Horus legion. I'll be doing them in the Sea green scheme, the sort of interim scheme between the Lunar Wolves and the Black Legion schemes, I think it will look striking on the tabletop, and more importantly to me be fun to paint and weather.

Plagiarism or just paranoia?

So most of you who have seen my work, or have been on my photobucket will remember these guys.

And I made this tutorial, 4 years ago to show everyone else how they could do the same, apologies for the pic quality, it was 4 years ago . .

Now I'm sure alot of you read/watch BoLS, and may have seen the article on how to do a simple autumn camouflage . . .

And this is his article . .

So am I just being paranoid? What do you think?

Finished Nids

So I did it!

I finished the tyranid army on time, at 1am the night before the tournament I had finished gluing the grass tufts to the bases.

Pic taken during the "beauty pageant" at QM II 27/05/12

I am also pleased to report that I won best painted :)

Less pleased by the prize of a OOP box of shining spears, but the KR dice box was nice, and will be handy for future tournament outings.

Now just have to paint 170 more spawn-gants *sigh*

The army performed fairly well in game, having a draw against razor spam BA's, a minor loss to CSM (9 obliterators, 2x lash), major loss to CSM (2x defiler, dread, 2 princes, obliterators), a major win against a fairly fluffy SW list (4 Twolves, Twolf lord, rune priest, wolf priest, longfangs, redeemer, 30x grey hunters), and a minor win against a fellow nid (9 hive guard, 2 tervigons, t-fex, prime)

One thing I found was the lack of mobility hampered me in dealing with tanks, especially on terrain heavy tables, the base sizes of the multiple monstrous creatures really hampered my ability to move, and spawning gants compounded this.

Overall I fairly happy with them, and think with a few minor changes (maybe drop one tervigon, prime and a small squad of combat warriors, or hormaogaunts, or trygon) it could become a really challenging list to play against.

Also dawn of war setup with 3 tervigons on the halfway line at the start of the game is nasty!

Mawlocs!

Another couple of days have passed, 4 days til my deadline! To prove I'm not slacking heres a couple of pics of my latest work.

The 2 mawlocs will be used in the list to hit back field units like longfangs and whirlwinds, pop cans to get the juicy meat out and otherwise just cause a nuisance, like daemonic whack a moles, and take the heat off my spawners as they waddle up the field.

Not the greatest of angles, I'll try and get some more later.

Thanks for looking.

Doomy, doom doom doom!

So. Don't let the amount of updates recently deceive you, this is going to be down to the wire. I have 6 days to paint 7 monstrous creatures (ok, one of them is a pod, but its still pretty big).

Either way, another model down, I'm actually pretty happy with how this guy came out, the conversion isn't new, but I added some more spines to mine, and a tail. I'm excited to use this guy on my opponents too (except grey knights).

I really like the helmet design, I just have to source some aquarium plants to finish the base.

Tyrannofex

I'm on a roll now it seems :)

More nids!

So its been a busy couple of days, and even with the distractions of having a life I managed to finish the 23 gants I need for the starting squads. I've taken to calling them table-gants, and the others are spawn -gants. The spawners can wait til after I finish the rest of them before I throw some paint at them.

Rumours of my death have been greatly exaggerated. . .

So its been along time since blog posts, life has a strange habit of kicking me in the arse every 2 years, and last month my number came up again.

During my first night off, and several beverages I managed to compound dislocate my left ankle, this left me in hospital for over a week, and laid up in bed for 2 more after that.

Not pretty huh?
Since then however, I have been reminded by my mates that I made another stupid army painting based bet, and with 16 days to go, I have to paint 1750ish points of tyranids!

Monday, 2 January 2012

And now for something completely different!

And now for something completely different, I've been dragged back to the Imperial fold by GK's. I got some cheap from a mate that was getting out of the hobby, and like every other bastard I've decided the best way to run them is with a large squad of paladins.

The list will be:
Draigo
libby
10 termis
10 pladins
1 dreadknight

This is mostly a painting exercise. I might sell them soon after completion too, if any one wants to make an offer ;)

As to the painting. Heres the test.

As you can see, I have painted them in the original Index astartes scheme, basically when they were just anti psyker deathwatch. I much prefer this to the silver scheme as I think it looks alot more sinister. Can't imagine the boys in silver slaughtering the surviving population of a planet because they saw a daemon.

Anyway, C&C welcome, its good to be back Imperium!
