Sons of Horus milestone!

21 months I have been painting these Sons of bitches, and I can finally say it. I have a playable force!

Only 1000 points, and not very optimised, or even fluffy, but its a start. . .

I guess I'll start with the new additions, firstly, HQ's.

This is Moritat Axander, and will pretty much ruin anyones day if he gets a turn of chainfire shooting at them. I haven't seen that many of these guys around the forums and blogs, which is surprising considering the damage potential they have with 2 plasma pistols.

I used the current 40k plasma pistols because I think the 30k ones look like a hair driers . . .
Unusually for me, he is clad entirely in Mk IV armour, although I did make a couple of modifications to it. There has been an extra armoured plate sculpted onto the left greave, and a plasticard strip and rivets added to the crown of his helmet to differentiate it from rank and file, and give him a pseudo crest/mohawk.

Next in the HQ slot is a Praetor in terminator armour, because a Moritat can't lead your force.

I took the normal Terminator Praetor and converted him to have lightning claws, just a simple matter of cutting all the relevant parts at the elbows and pinning them together. I also heated (carefully) the fingers on the left hand to give him a pointing/commanding pose. Looking at the pics, I need to add some definition eye sockets to the skull on the night lords shoulder pad.

I've never been a fan of unhelmeted marines, something about going into battle without a lid when explosive projectiles are flying around just seems dumb to me. So I squeezed a Mk II helmet in with a bit of trimming. Unfortunately some super glue got into the eye slit and destroyed the detail, but it still works as a gaming piece.

And what is a pimp, without an entourage?

Basically just stock Cataphractii terminators from Forgeworld, its hard to improve on perfection. The only thing I added was a heraldic shield from the Grey knight terminators to the Sgt.

And thats it for the new stuff. The observant among you would have noticed that the basing has changed though. The new style matches the tyranids, and will match the Ad mech, and the table I am going to make (eventually) for my collection. This meant that the rest of the 1k needed to be rebased.

The Sgt also had a head repose so he wasn't looking at his shoes.
Unfortunately I have to lose the stomping pose on the dread due to time constraints, but I kept the marine and the base so I can redo it at a later stage with another contemptor.

And thats 1000 points (plus a rhino), my photo set up isn't big enough to get all the models into one shot, but I'll take lots of pics at the 30k tournament being run by John from The Painting Bunker called The Emperors Legions, which is set to be epic, including a group shot.

Thanks for stopping in and reading my ramblings, what do you think of the new additions and new basing style?

Kheres Mortis complete

Hello again. Welcome to another update of my rambling towards completing a Sons of Horus army, Today I present the completed Kheres pattern Mortis contemptor.

This guy came together quickly in the end, probably because I rushed him, and because I fell into the trap of over weathering him. I'm not unhappy with the results until I put the two completed dreads together and compare them, the first has a much more controlled application of chipping which I prefer the finish of.

Anyway, here's the pics:

Tac squad and Rhino done!

I apologise for the lack of recent updates, I'd like to say its been because I've been busy, but I've just been lazy.

But putting that behind me, I found my mojo, and its been a busy couple of days here at Casa de Sheep, the results of which I present to you now.

Here's the finished Tactical squad #3

As you can see they are armed with a missile launcher and plasma gun, for general duties, I think this load out is pretty straightforward and can threaten most things on the table.

More after the jump.

Contemptor #2 - Kheres Mortis

Managed to get a day of modelling in as a reward for finishing all my assignments, and this is what I knocked out.

Kheres Contemptor
Being the poor uni student that I am now I was forced to make the arms myself. I had previously cast the multimelta for a failed autocannon conversion, so I used it as a base. The ammo hopper is from the front mount of a Leman Russ MBT, the assault cannon barrels are from the stormravens I built for the khorne wing. Cyclone is from the termi box, again because I'm cheap.

The groin had to be cast as well, because I didn't receive one in the package whan I bought him, and seeing as I could, and it would take weeks and alot of hassle to get a replacement I thought this was easier.

I tried really hard to make the cowering fist look like he was actually afraid. It wasnt actually working til i remembered I had a fine cast termi Librarian left over from my conversion for the GK's I never finished.

In the eventual list #2 will play flyer defence, Bs 5 skyfire and 12 assault cannon shots, and 2 krak missiles will ruin most flyers days.

Contemptor PIP

Updates are coming thick and fast these days, going to stop soon though. Anyway, got some work done on the contemptor for the Sons.

They had been put on ice for a while due to the nids getting some love, but I put paint to model today in a fit of procrastination.

As you can see, hes not as clean as DPA's SoH, I just couldn't get excited by that style of painting, hes in the middle of the seige of terra, there isn;t going to be time to reapply paint to chipping.

This is obviously still PIP.

Let me know what you think, and any suggestions you may have will be greatly appreciated.

End is in sight!

Back again with more completed models, and tales of woe.

Twins, only both of them are uglier then Danny Devito

The eventual goal of this army has always been Adepticon, however I played in a "local" (QM IV - 200ish kms away) tournament 2 weekends ago, and I've always said I would love to take a new painted army to each of them if I won best painted. So in my hubris I submitted the BA list thinking it'd motivate me to finish. It didn't :(

But I still came 20th out of 54, a result I'm fairly happy with considering the complete lack of scoring units in a tournament with 4 objective based missions!

I find my painting mojo is either completely sapped or recharged by these events, unfortunately it was the former this time, and since the last update all I've managed to achieve is finishing the pods and the last 2 dreads.

The last 2 dreads are the "alpha strike" component of the list, dropping in and neutralizing  what ever the greatest armoured threat is on the table, well thats the plan.

It worked properly twice in 5 games, one game the 1st turn pod earnt me a landraider kill, and another game I got a predator by dragging it into combat with me, and using its wreckage as cover for my opponents shooting phase :D

Now I just have to finish the infantry and I can move onto painting something for fun, or profit. Or both if I paint an eBay experiment paladin list.

Also I'd like to pass on my thanks to all the new followers I have, you all make it feel worthwhile posting from the gaming wasteland that is my home town.

Blender dreads done

Another 2 models closer to finishing this army.

It was almost a disaster though, the store where I buy my  varnish from has been unable to restock due to a change in supplier, so I couldn't get my regular spray varnish at all. So I had to resort to "Army painter anti shine matte". Let me tell you, it does exactly what it says, but too well.

Stormravens finished!

Yes, plural.

I thought photographing one of these bad boys was a pain!

I applied the finishing touches to these two this afternoon. Mostly it was just mucking around with the lense effect on the canopies. Its just a bastardized version of the effect alot of people are using on their GK power weapons.

A tip for young players, the extra 5 minutes you spend in preparation (masking, cleaning, mixing etc) will pay of 100x by the time you get to finishing. Rushing simply ruins things. I learnt the hard way, going from this:

Notice the bleeding, splatters and peeling, all caused by shoddy prep. The masking tape wasn't sealed properly, the paint was too thin (and my airbrush has a splatter gremlin I can't seem to shake atm), and I should have used a white primer instead of simple acrylic to paint the white base over the varnish I'd laid over the reds.

To this:

To this:

Not the greatest, but I managed to cover up most of the blemishes and I think they came out pretty well. The only thing bothering me now is that the reflection/lines aren't parallel, but this is because I was trying to cover as many of the random splotches of paint with the fewest lines, and its something I can live with.

A couple more pics:

I'm really happy overall with how these things turned out, they are the biggest models I have to paint for this army, so its definitely a relief to get them out of the way.

Finally: whats next.

Khorne WIP part II

Here are the pics of the dreads, and dread pods I said I'd put up. I still haven't started the infantry for this army, which is a bad thing because I have a month to finish the army now, but good because I changed the list a touch.

Any way the pics:

The dread pods, I converted these alittle bit to look more like the dreadclaw pods from FW. All I had to do was invert the fins, and clip a little bit of plastic off of what is not the bottom, where the engine would normally sit. Then using plasticard I made a plate for the roof to mount the engine, and made chaos stars out of strip.

Next is a group shot of the dreads assembled with all their arms attached. I am still waiting on some chain to be delivered from eBay to complete the 2 magna grappl/fist arms.

I have actually completed one of the storm ravens, however it is being an absolute pain to photograph, so once I figure out how to solve that I'll put up some pics.
